Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own analysis. Often, you'll find that prediction markets are more accurate than sportsbook odds, especially when there's significant public interest and information available. However, sportsbook odds can sometimes move faster to incorporate breaking news, so comparing them can be insightful.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more people buy shares in a specific player, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher implied probability of that player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movement is driven entirely by supply and demand, with no central authority setting the odds. This creates a dynamic and responsive market that reflects the collective intelligence of the traders.
