Often, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market represents the collective beliefs of informed traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of trading. It's common to see prediction market prices move closer to the eventual outcome as more information becomes available, and potentially outperform traditional sportsbook odds in accuracy.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price isn’t tied to any specific external factor beyond the actions of traders on the platform, making it a purely belief-based assessment of the match’s potential results.
