Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own analyses and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can take a position in this market, driving the price to reflect their collective assessment. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when public opinion diverges from expert analysis, or when new information emerges that hasn’t been fully incorporated into sportsbook lines.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief about the outcome of the Shevchuk vs. Ivchenko match. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability estimate. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. Conversely, selling pressure drives prices down. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the aggregate opinion of all participants.
