Frequently asked questions

Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven purely by traders’ willingness to buy or sell, leading to odds that can be more accurate, especially when a significant amount of volume is traded. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of each market. Analyzing these differences can offer valuable insights.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the perceived chance of that outcome occurring, with prices ranging from 0 to 100. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
