Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while prediction markets allow traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to discrepancies, with this market potentially offering odds that differ from those available elsewhere. It's common to see prediction markets quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities based on collective intelligence, potentially outpacing the adjustments made by sportsbooks. Comparing the two can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price fluctuates, reflecting the collective wisdom of the crowd. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares; no external factors directly influence the pricing on Polymarket.
