Frequently, prediction market odds offer a different perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a ‘vig’ or commission into their odds, while Polymarket allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to differences in implied probabilities, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market reflects the collective wisdom of traders responding to a wider range of factors, potentially including less quantifiable data or inside information. It’s a useful comparison point to gauge market confidence.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different exact scores. The price of each share reflects the market’s collective belief about the probability of that score occurring. As more traders participate, the prices adjust to reflect the evolving consensus. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market depth, visible on the dashboard, shows the volume of shares available at different price points, indicating potential support and resistance levels. This dynamic pricing allows for a real-time assessment of expectations for the match's final result, based on informed speculation.
