Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows participants to directly express their beliefs about the outcome. If sportsbook odds suggest a clear favorite, this market may show a more nuanced view, especially if there’s significant uncertainty or disagreement among participants. It’s common to see discrepancies, as prediction markets can incorporate information not readily reflected in sportsbook lines, such as insider knowledge or subtle shifts in public opinion.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of each outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the market price converges towards a consensus view. The platform uses a decentralized approach, meaning there’s no central authority setting the price; instead, it’s determined by the collective actions of market participants. The current implied probability of the top outcome is unknown, as is the total volume traded.
