Comparing prediction market odds to those offered by sportsbooks reveals how collective intelligence differs from professional oddsmakers' assessments. Often, prediction markets can incorporate information more quickly than traditional sportsbooks, especially regarding nuanced factors not easily quantifiable. If sportsbook odds heavily favor one outcome, but this market shows a more balanced probability distribution, it suggests disagreement between the two. It's important to note that sportsbooks and prediction markets serve different purposes and attract different types of participants, leading to potential discrepancies in pricing.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the prices adjust accordingly, creating a dynamic representation of collective prediction. The market's efficiency depends on the volume of trading and the diversity of opinions among participants.
