Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market’s probabilities are driven purely by traders willing to put their capital at risk. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it may signal an opportunity for arbitrage. However, it's important to consider factors like differing market liquidity and the potential for information advantages held by sportsbook professionals when making comparisons.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined by the forces of supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own analysis of the event. This creates a dynamic and efficient price discovery process.
