Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a ‘vig’ or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin. This market, driven by the collective wisdom of traders, aims to reflect the true probability of an outcome. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, prediction markets can quickly adjust to incorporate new information and potentially outperform traditional odds, especially as the event approaches. It’s common to see discrepancies, reflecting differing opinions and information access.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of a particular outcome. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand amongst traders on Polymarket, and isn’t influenced by external factors or a centralized price setter. The current price indicates what traders collectively believe is the likelihood of the outcome.
