Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which are set by professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like public betting patterns and risk management into their pricing, while this market relies on individuals’ independent assessments of player skill and match conditions. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply variations in opinion. It's common to see prediction markets offer more nuanced probabilities, especially when there is significant uncertainty surrounding the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. Higher demand for shares in a specific outcome will drive its price up, indicating a greater perceived chance of success, while increased selling pressure will lower the price. This dynamic process ensures that the market price remains responsive to new information and changing sentiment.
