Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, incorporating a margin for themselves. This market, however, is driven purely by the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome. As a result, you may find that the implied probabilities on Polymarket differ from those offered by sportsbooks, potentially highlighting discrepancies in public perception or specialized knowledge about the players involved. It's a fascinating comparison to see where the crowd diverges from professional oddsmakers.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This means that as more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and the implied probability rises. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price and decreases the implied probability. The market efficiently aggregates information as traders react to news and updates related to the Smith vs Schoolkate match.
