Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market’s prices are driven purely by traders expressing their beliefs about the likelihood of each exact score. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. However, it’s important to note that sportsbooks and this market have different costs and limitations, which can contribute to these differences.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous double auction, meaning traders buy and sell shares of each possible outcome, establishing the probabilities. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived likelihood. The market’s price is determined by the forces of supply and demand, with traders acting on their individual assessments of the match’s potential result. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing mechanism allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities accordingly.
