Prediction market odds, like those found on Polymarket and Kalshi, often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the nature of how they are determined. Sportsbooks set lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while prediction markets rely on the collective intelligence of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. This market, for example, reflects the aggregated beliefs of participants, potentially incorporating information not fully captured by sportsbooks. These differences can create opportunities for arbitrage, where traders exploit discrepancies between the two types of odds.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi can diverge for several reasons, even when tracking the same event. Differences in user base, trading fees, and market-specific rules can all contribute to price discrepancies. For instance, Polymarket currently favors Fraport Skyliners wins at an implied probability, while Kalshi leans toward Hamburg Towers winning. These variations also reflect differing levels of liquidity and trading activity on each platform. The volume of trading and the number of active participants can influence price discovery, leading to distinct valuations across Polymarket and Kalshi.
