Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own analysis and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it may indicate that the market possesses information not yet fully incorporated by sportsbooks, or that different groups are weighting information differently. It’s important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are derived through distinct mechanisms and participant motivations.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or a central authority setting the odds. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities accordingly.
