Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a ‘vig’ or commission into their odds, while this market aims to represent the true probability of an outcome as assessed by traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of expertise, access to information, or simply variations in opinion. It's common to see prediction markets move more efficiently based on new information, potentially offering a more accurate forecast than sportsbook odds, though this isn’t always the case.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market remains responsive to changing conditions and provides a real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
