Generally, prediction market odds tend to reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often proving more accurate than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, biases, or simply variations in opinion. If significant differences exist, opportunities for arbitrage may emerge, where traders can profit by exploiting the price difference between the two.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket.
