Often, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may set initial lines based on statistical models and expert opinions, while this market incorporates the collective judgment of many traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply the diverse perspectives represented within the prediction market. It's common to see this market adjust rapidly to news or developments that might not be immediately reflected in sportsbook lines, offering a potentially more dynamic assessment of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to find an equilibrium point. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price isn't determined by a central authority but emerges from the collective actions of all participants, making it a decentralized and potentially more accurate forecast of the event’s result.
