Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market aggregates the beliefs of informed traders. If a significant amount of volume flows towards one outcome, the odds will adjust accordingly, potentially signaling disagreement with the sportsbook's initial assessment. It's common to see prediction markets outperform traditional sportsbooks, especially when information advantages exist among market participants. However, sportsbook odds can provide a useful benchmark for comparison.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in whether Fleetwood Town or Rotherham United will score first. As more shares are purchased for a particular team, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of shares directly translates to the probability assigned to each outcome, with the platform ensuring the total probability across all outcomes sums to 100%. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust expectations.
