Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market allows traders to freely adjust probabilities based on their own research and insights. If there’s a significant discrepancy, it might indicate that the market believes the sportsbook is mispricing the event. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds, particularly when there’s a lot of information available and active trading. Examining these differences can reveal valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each exact score. As more shares are traded for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. Traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions, as they profit if their chosen outcome is correct. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
