Prediction market odds, like those found on Polymarket and Kalshi for this market, often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the mechanisms behind price discovery. Sportsbooks set odds based on their internal models and aim to profit from balanced betting, while prediction markets rely on the collective intelligence of traders who have a financial incentive to accurately forecast the outcome. This can lead to prediction markets being more efficient and reflecting a more accurate probability, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available. However, sportsbooks may offer different types of bets not available in this market.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi can diverge due to variations in trader demographics, market design, and liquidity. Each platform attracts a different user base with varying levels of expertise and risk tolerance, influencing their trading behavior. Furthermore, the specific rules and fee structures of each platform can impact price formation. For example, differing trading limits or gas fees could create temporary discrepancies. The current volume of $5,035 suggests a relatively nascent market, which may amplify these differences until more trading activity occurs.
