Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their independent beliefs. As the event approaches, the odds on Polymarket may converge with sportsbook odds, particularly if there's strong agreement between the two. However, discrepancies can persist due to differing information access or analytical approaches. It's common to find that prediction markets are more accurate than traditional polls in forecasting event outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares on Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or predetermined formulas. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
