Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individual predictions and the willingness to take opposing positions. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Comparing the two can provide valuable insights into public perception and potential value bets, though it’s important to remember they represent different approaches to forecasting the outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price discovery process is entirely driven by supply and demand, meaning the odds will shift based on the collective actions of traders on the platform. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
