Often, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks may set initial odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome, leading to potentially different probabilities. Discrepancies can arise due to varying levels of information, biases, or simply differing opinions among participants. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information more quickly than sportsbooks, especially regarding factors not easily quantifiable.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. The market's price is determined entirely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the pricing process on Polymarket.
