Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on traders directly assessing probabilities. If a significant discrepancy exists between this market and sportsbook odds, it could indicate that traders possess information not yet fully priced into the sportsbook lines, or simply disagree with the sportsbook's assessment. It’s common to see convergence as the event approaches, but differences can persist due to varying information and analytical approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s pricing is entirely driven by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or a central authority setting prices.
