Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is undervaluing a player, they can drive the prediction market odds in the opposite direction. It's common to see discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public opinion shifts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in an outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price will fluctuate, providing a dynamic assessment of the match's potential results. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for these shares, and represents the collective forecast of those trading.
