Generally, prediction markets like Polymarket often reflect information and insights that differ from traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set odds based on statistical models and public perception, while this market aggregates the wisdom of the crowd, allowing traders to incorporate a wider range of factors, including potentially non-public information. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially early in the market’s lifecycle, as prediction markets can be more responsive to new information and shifts in sentiment. Comparing the two can offer a broader perspective on the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome, and the price of those shares fluctuates based on supply and demand. As more traders bet on a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price of a share indicates the market’s implied probability of that outcome occurring. The market’s design incentivizes accurate predictions, as successful traders profit from correctly anticipating the event’s result.
