Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, which can differ from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, factoring in a margin for themselves, while this market allows traders to directly express their beliefs about the probability of each outcome. Therefore, you may observe discrepancies between the implied probabilities in this market and those offered by traditional sportsbooks, potentially indicating areas where the crowd believes the sportsbook's assessment is inaccurate. Examining these differences can be insightful for both bettors and those interested in forecasting accuracy.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price of shares will adjust, reflecting the evolving consensus. The current price reflects the collective assessment of all traders on Polymarket regarding the likelihood of each team winning the ELH hockey match.
