Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on models and internal analysis, while this market aggregates the views of individual traders. When comparing to sportsbook odds, it’s important to consider factors like differing incentives – sportsbooks aim to profit, while prediction market participants are motivated by accurate forecasts. Any discrepancies could highlight areas where the crowd believes the sportsbook’s assessment is inaccurate.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood, driven by informed participants and their willingness to take positions.
