Prediction market odds, like those found in this market, often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the nature of how they are determined. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. In contrast, this market’s probabilities are driven by supply and demand – traders directly buying and selling based on their beliefs. This can lead to more accurate predictions, as the crowd’s collective intelligence is leveraged, and there's no built-in profit margin distorting the true probabilities.
Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi can diverge for several reasons. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform has a different user base with varying levels of expertise and information. Trading volume also plays a role; a market with higher volume on one platform tends to have more stable and efficient pricing. Furthermore, the specific market structures – such as the types of contracts offered and the fees charged – can influence trading behavior and ultimately, the displayed probabilities. These factors contribute to the observed differences in how traders assess the likelihood of various outcomes.
