Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their risk and ensure profit, while this market represents the collective belief of informed traders. It’s common to see this market move independently of sportsbook odds, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information access and analytical approaches between sportsbooks and prediction market participants. Analyzing these differences can reveal potential value in either market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price converges towards what the market collectively believes is the true probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and changes dynamically based on trading activity and new information available to traders.
