Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by real-money trading and the aggregated beliefs of individuals. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of trading occurs. These differences can arise from varying levels of information, biases, or simply differing interpretations of the available data. Observing these differences can be a valuable exercise for anyone interested in understanding how information is processed and priced.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of each outcome. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own assessments of the event's likelihood. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence.
