Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines to balance their risk and ensure profit, while this market relies on individuals predicting the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the event's probabilities. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than traditional sportsbooks, especially as the event draws closer.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price fluctuates, reflecting the evolving consensus. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is determined by the share price relative to 1; a share priced at 0.60 indicates a 60% implied probability.
