Prediction market odds often differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks due to the different incentives of participants. Sportsbooks aim to profit by setting odds that attract balanced betting, while prediction market participants are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. This can lead to prediction markets reflecting a 'wisdom of the crowd' effect, potentially offering more accurate probabilities. It's common to see this market diverge from initial sportsbook lines as new information becomes available and more traders participate, expressing their informed opinions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand; as more traders believe an outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market constantly adjusts to incorporate new information and trader sentiment.
