Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market relies on individuals directly expressing their beliefs through trading. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when public opinion shifts. Examining these differences can be insightful, as prediction markets sometimes prove more accurate than traditional odds, though that is not always the case.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts, reflecting the evolving consensus.
