Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to participate and express their beliefs. This can lead to discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. It’s common to see prediction markets incorporate information more quickly than sportsbooks, potentially offering more accurate probabilities as the event approaches. Examining these differences can provide valuable insights into market perceptions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price movements are driven by supply and demand; increased buying pressure raises the price, indicating greater confidence in that outcome, while selling pressure lowers it. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information and changing expectations.
