Prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market is driven purely by the collective wisdom of traders. If sportsbook odds show a clear favorite, it’s interesting to see if this market agrees, or if traders believe the sportsbook is mispricing the probability of a particular outcome. Discrepancies can arise from differing information sources or varying interpretations of the players' strengths and weaknesses.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe in an outcome, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the latest information and collective intelligence.
