Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, and may be influenced by promotional considerations. This market, however, is driven purely by the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, prediction markets can quickly adjust to incorporate new information and potentially outperform sportsbook odds, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available. It’s a fascinating comparison of different forecasting methods.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price dynamically adjusts based on supply and demand, providing a real-time assessment of the event's potential results. This differs from fixed-odds betting, allowing for more nuanced and responsive pricing based on the collective intelligence of the crowd.
