Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, allows traders to express their own informed opinions, leading to odds that may more accurately represent the true probability of an outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply the collective intelligence of market participants compared to sportsbook algorithms. Examining these differences can be insightful for both bettors and analysts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure drives prices down. This dynamic process ensures that the market price constantly adjusts to incorporate new information and changing sentiment regarding the Curitiba doubles match.
