Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which may be influenced by factors like house bias or public perception. Sportsbooks establish initial lines to balance betting action, while this market allows traders to freely adjust probabilities based on their own analysis. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Examining these differences can offer valuable insights into where the crowd and professional oddsmakers diverge in their assessments of the match's likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different exact scores for the match. The price of each share reflects the market's probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the prices adjust to reflect the aggregated beliefs of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s efficiency is driven by the incentive for traders to accurately predict the outcome, as profitable trades are rewarded. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date information available to participants.
