Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own analysis and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals trading based on their own information and beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view by trading on Polymarket, potentially causing the prediction market odds to diverge from those offered by sportsbooks. It's a fascinating comparison of different approaches to forecasting event outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the market’s implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price and reduces the implied probability. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, constantly adjusting as new information becomes available and opinions shift regarding the Cotorcea vs. Iurcenco match.
