Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. As more information becomes available – such as team news or weather reports – the odds on Polymarket may move closer to, or further away from, those offered by sportsbooks. It's common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds in accuracy, especially as the event approaches, as they incorporate a broader range of perspectives.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange where traders buy and sell shares representing different exact scores. The price of each share reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders believe a particular score is likely, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s efficiency comes from the incentives for traders to accurately assess the probability of each outcome, leading to a collective forecast. This dynamic pricing mechanism allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust expectations.
