Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin. This market, however, is driven by the collective wisdom of traders, theoretically leading to more accurate probabilities, though discrepancies can occur. It's common to see prediction markets reacting more quickly to new information and potentially offering better value, depending on how efficiently the market processes information. Comparing the odds can reveal where public sentiment differs from expert analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's potential results, driven by the traders themselves.
