Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a ‘vig’ or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability as assessed by bettors. It’s common to see differences emerge, particularly as new information surfaces or public sentiment shifts. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market allows the wisdom of the crowd to influence pricing, potentially leading to more accurate predictions as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of each player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to find an equilibrium point that represents the collective prediction. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market remains responsive to new information and changing perceptions of the players' chances.
