Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to reflect the true probabilities as assessed by traders. This can lead to discrepancies, with prediction markets sometimes offering more favorable odds, particularly when there's strong disagreement with the sportsbook's initial assessment. However, as more information becomes available and the event draws closer, the odds on Polymarket and sportsbook odds may converge, reflecting a shared understanding of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of a share directly reflects the market’s implied probability of that outcome occurring. As traders exchange shares, the prices adjust, providing a dynamic assessment of the event’s potential results. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is driven entirely by supply and demand, meaning it's a direct expression of collective belief among those participating in the market. This contrasts with odds set by bookmakers who build in a profit margin.
