Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a 'wisdom of the crowd' that can differ from traditional sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set initial odds based on their own analysis, aiming to balance risk and attract bets. This market, however, allows individuals to express their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that incorporate a wider range of information and perspectives. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of expertise, biases, or access to information among participants in each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information than sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is entirely determined by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the valuation of shares. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
