Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the wisdom of the crowd. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is undervaluing or overvaluing a player’s chances, the odds on Polymarket will adjust accordingly. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply a different assessment of the players' form and potential. Comparing the two can reveal interesting insights into public perception versus professional analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market efficiently incorporates new information as it becomes available, reflecting the collective judgment of all participants. This dynamic pricing ensures the odds constantly adapt to changing perceptions of the match’s likely result.
