Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the varying incentives of participants. It's common to see prediction markets incorporate information more quickly than traditional odds, especially in response to breaking news or unexpected developments. Examining these differences can offer valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price fluctuates, reflecting the evolving consensus. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares, with no external factors influencing the valuation. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
