Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven by individuals expressing their beliefs about the outcome. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. These differences can present opportunities for informed traders who believe the market has mispriced the probability of a particular result. Examining both sets of odds can offer a more comprehensive view of the expected result.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a specific outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts accordingly, providing a dynamic assessment of the event’s potential results. The market’s efficiency relies on the active participation of informed traders and the availability of relevant information. This creates a constantly updating forecast based on collective intelligence.
