Typically, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring profit regardless of the outcome, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. If prediction market odds significantly differ from sportsbook odds, it could indicate disagreement about the true likelihood of either player winning. Discrepancies can arise from differing information sources, varying levels of expertise among traders and bookmakers, or simply differing risk appetites. It’s important to consider both when forming an opinion.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome of the Catania tennis match. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. Conversely, selling shares drives the price down. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of shares directly translates to the implied probability of that outcome occurring, providing a real-time assessment of expectations. The market’s efficiency depends on active participation and informed trading.
